Hardware sourcing & supplier selection
Telematics hardware sourcing and supplier selection
Trackers, AI dashcams, multi-camera DVRs, GPS asset trackers and sensors — sourced from the EU, the US, China and the Far East, to your specification, certified for your markets and due-diligenced before you commit.
Why hardware decisions matter
The device is where telematics products succeed or fail
Hardware is the most expensive mistake a telematics, video telematics or asset-tracking business can make. A device that ships late, fails certification, drains batteries, drops connectivity or arrives without a usable protocol document will cost more in churn, support tickets and lost tenders than it ever saved on unit price.
We have specified, sourced, certified and deployed hardware at scale — from OBD trackers and CAN-connected units to AI-enabled dashcams, side-scan and reversing cameras, multi-channel DVRs and battery-powered asset tags. That experience is what we bring to your selection.
What we source
- Vehicle telematics units: OBD, hardwired, CAN and tachograph-integrated
- Video telematics: AI dashcams, driver-facing DMS/ADAS cameras, multi-camera DVR and MDVR systems
- Vehicle safety cameras, sensors and camera monitor systems
- GPS asset trackers: wired, battery, solar and rechargeable
- BLE, LoRaWAN and hybrid asset tags for indoor and yard tracking
- Sensors and peripherals: temperature, door, fuel, tyre pressure, driver ID, panic and PTO
- Trailer, plant and off-highway equipment telematics
Sourcing regions
EU, US, China or Far East — matched to spec and customer requirements
There is no single right answer. The best source depends on the device class, the target market, the customer's procurement rules and how much customisation you need. This is how we typically frame the choice.
| Region | Typical strengths | Where it fits best | Watch-points we manage |
|---|---|---|---|
| European Union | Mature telematics module and tracker ecosystem, strong protocol documentation, CE/RED and E-mark experience, close support in European time zones. | Fleet telematics units, tachograph integration, EU public-sector and OEM programmes with data-residency or origin requirements. | Higher unit cost; limited depth in video and camera manufacturing; lead-time exposure on component shortages. |
| United States | Carrier-certified cellular designs, strong North American compliance heritage (FCC, PTCRB), NDAA-aware supply chains. | US and Canadian deployments, government and utility customers, programmes where component origin is contractually controlled. | Pricing premium; often assembled from Far East components — origin claims need verification. |
| China | Unmatched scale and speed in dashcams, MDVR, cameras, trackers and sensors; deep ODM capability and rapid customisation. | Cost-sensitive volume programmes, own-brand ODM devices, video telematics and multi-camera systems. | Factory qualification, firmware quality and cyber-security, IP protection, tariff exposure, and eligibility restrictions in some public-sector markets. |
| Far East (Taiwan, Korea, Japan, SE Asia) | High-quality imaging, GNSS and cellular components; strong automotive-grade manufacturing discipline; increasingly used to diversify away from single-country risk. | Camera modules and automotive-grade video systems, OEM line-fit programmes, dual-sourcing strategies. | Minimum order quantities, longer tooling cycles and a smaller pool of telematics-specific ODMs. |
Our supplier selection process
A structured route from requirement to signed supply agreement
Requirements and specification
Use cases, vehicle and asset types, environmental conditions, connectivity, positioning, power, mounting, certification targets and target unit cost — captured in a specification that suppliers can actually quote against.
Market scan and long-list
We map the manufacturer and ODM landscape across the EU, US, China and the Far East, screen for capability, certification history and financial standing, and produce a qualified long-list.
RFP authoring and structured evaluation
A weighted scoring matrix covers technical fit, protocol and API documentation, firmware roadmap, security, warranty, MOQ, lead time and landed cost — so the decision is defensible to your board.
Sample validation and field trials
Bench testing, GNSS and cellular performance, video quality, power draw, thermal behaviour, ingress and vibration, followed by on-vehicle or on-asset trials against the original use cases.
Commercial and technical due diligence
Factory audits or third-party inspection, IP and design-ownership checks, escrow arrangements where appropriate, RMA and repair processes, and end-of-life commitments.
Contract, onboarding and launch
Supply agreement terms, forecasting and stock-holding, kit building, labelling and packaging, installer training and first-batch quality gates — through to launch readiness.
Certification & compliance
Designed in from the start, not bolted on at the end
Certification failures are the most common cause of launch delays we see. We build the compliance plan into the specification and the supplier scorecard, and we validate supplier claims rather than accepting a certificate on trust.
- CE marking under the Radio Equipment Directive; UKCA for Great Britain
- UNECE Regulation 10 (E-mark) for vehicle EMC; R46 for camera monitor systems
- FCC and ISED approvals, PTCRB and GCF cellular certification, operator approvals
- IP and ISO 16750 environmental ratings for vehicle and off-highway use
- Product security requirements including the UK PSTI regime and ETSI EN 303 645
- Direct Vision Standard (DVS) and Progressive Safe System (PSS) equipment requirements
- UK GDPR and data-protection implications of video and location data
Questions we're often asked
Hardware sourcing FAQ
Which regions do you source telematics hardware from?
It depends on the specification and the customer's requirements. We source from EU manufacturers, US-designed and US-assembled suppliers, and ODM/OEM factories in China and the wider Far East (including Taiwan, South Korea, Japan and South-East Asia). Each region has a different profile on unit cost, lead time, certification, cyber-security posture, intellectual-property protection and public-sector eligibility — we help you weigh those trade-offs against your target markets.
Can you help with white-label or own-brand telematics devices?
Yes. We regularly run ODM programmes where a device is customised — enclosure, firmware, protocol, branding and packaging — and manufactured under your brand. We manage the specification, factory selection, sample validation, tooling and pre-production approval on your behalf.
What certifications does telematics hardware need in the UK and Europe?
Typically CE marking under the Radio Equipment Directive and UKCA for Great Britain, UNECE Regulation 10 (E-mark) for vehicle electromagnetic compatibility, and cellular certification (GCF and, for North America, PTCRB) plus mobile network operator approval. Camera monitor systems replacing mirrors need UNECE R46; London operators must meet the Direct Vision Standard and Progressive Safe System. We build the certification plan into the specification from day one.
Do you take commission from hardware suppliers?
No. We are paid by our clients only. Recommendations are made on specification fit, quality, certification, commercial terms and total cost of ownership.
How long does a hardware selection project take?
A focused selection — requirements, RFP, evaluation and shortlist — typically takes six to ten weeks. Sample validation, field trials and certification add time depending on the device class and whether customisation is required.
